8 Reasons Young Americans Don't Fight Back: How the US Crushed Youth Resistance ›

The ruling elite have created social institutions that have subdued young Americans and broken their spirit of resistance.

I remember when I realized this. Oh how they have subdues us with materialization and other distractions. Go somewhere like France or look at the revolutions going on across North Africa/the middle east, that’s what made me realized riot is possible, but they’ve squashed it from the Amerikkkan mind.

This article makes many true points, but I’m wary of its demoralizing tone, which seems almost like it’s telling organizers to throw their hands up in the air.

Young people — and older ones, too — ARE fighting back, in Wisconsin, Arizona, and many other places.

The working class in the U.S. has always faced big hurdles to action due to this country’s history of divide and conquer via genocide, slavery and imperialism. But it didn’t stop workers from fighting back in the 1930s, or oppressed communities and young people from fighting back in the Civil Rights Movement. It didn’t stop the rise of the Black Panthers or the anti-war, women’s and queer movements in the 1960s and 70s.

Yes, we have big obstacles to overcome. It will take some time to catch up with the youth in Egypt, Greece, etc. But we mustn’t stop trying!
