Revisiting my history
During the Vietnam War, my mother and my three older siblings stayed in the refugee camps in the Philippines for 8 months. This is a history they speak very little about because it was a harsh one. Visiting the Refugee Camps and Viet Village, I got a small glimpse into their struggle before America and humbled to be in such a strong family. I would hear the journey other families especially from my good from Thuy Tran. She was born in the camps and grew up there till she was 5.
Understanding this context was a process as I would imagine the conditions, the emotions, the anx while being entrapped in these constricting camps for so long. I hope to continue talking to my mom to further understand the harsh history that had to be lived to allow for me to be born. My mother stayed in the Bataan Camps nearby Manila but I think she was relocated from Palawan. We shall see mom…
